It is common knowledge that natural disasters like typhoon, earthquake, tsunami and cyclones can cause great havoc not only to our homes but in our life as well. These natural occurrences bring about big financial losses in homes and businesses; essentially, because you can never predict when they will hit your territory.

Preparing for Natural Disasters

Different natural catastrophe acts in dissimilar ways; the reason why each calamity brings about varying effects in your environment. Preparation aimed at protecting your home depends on the type of natural disaster that will transpire. This article will provide you with some essential ideas and tips on what action you need to carry out in preparation for different types of natural disaster. The action plans are grouped according to the natural disaster that you will be preparing for.

Cyclone

A cyclone is characterized by inflowing spiraling winds revolving counterclockwise in the Northern hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern hemisphere. Due to this movement, a cyclone can bring about great and massive damage to your home and its surrounding environment. It is why being prepared will minimize the harm that cyclones are capable of bringing about:

  • Be certain that your roof and gutters and other exterior fixtures are in the best condition to cope with heavy rain and the end product of this disaster.
  • Trim large bushes and trees on a regular basis. Make sure that they are far enough from your windows and roofs so as to prevent hitting the home during bouts of cyclone.
  • Do not leave outdoor furniture outside the house if there are signs suggestive of an incoming cyclone.
  • Shutters and metal screens should be checked if well-fastened.
  • Dead branches on trees should be removed once noticed.

Flood

If your home is situated in a place where flooding is always expected; you should:

  • File all essential documents and other paper files that can be damaged by water in a water-proof container.
  • Position electrical devices in an elevated spot so as to prevent damage and electrocution.
  • Not collect and gather chemicals and paint products on the floor.
  • Remember that laminated and tiled floors are more preferable than carpeted ones.

Earthquake

  • Always make sure that you immediately repair any spotted cracks in the wall.
  • Do not forget to keep seats and beds away from lighting and other hanging fixtures.
  • Affix safety fasteners to cabinet doors and cupboards so as to prevent opening during an earthquake.
  • Place a bracket on heavy furniture to prevent from falling in the event of an earthquake.

Bushfire

  • Always make sure that a hose is at hand and long enough to reach all exterior portions of the house vicinity.
  • Never store woods and other flammable materials inside your house.
  • Always cut grasses short.

It is expected that many insurance claims will flood the tables of insurance companies after a natural disastrous happening; proof that Mother Nature can sometimes be unforgiving. All of these are real facts and bigger losses are faced by your home especially if you are unprepared. Absolutely, you have no capacity to stop any kind of natural disaster. The good thing lies in the truth that you can do something to protect and save your home from the devastating effect of a typhoon, earthquake and other natural calamities.
